Weighbridges, whether concrete or steel, come in two different types based on installation: pit weighbridges and pitless weighbridges. The industry chooses them based on their location, available space, and soil conditions.

Installation and Maintenance: Pitless weighbridges are easy to install and require less time as no pit excavation is needed. It is set directly into a foundation of concrete. It is less labour intensive as well. Maintenance is also easier due to easy accessibility, and components are easier to change.


Pit weighbridges require civil work in the form of excavation and pit construction. The installation process is more complex. It may take several days, thus impacting operational efficiency.  Maintenance is difficult as the load cells and other components are beneath the surface. Water accumulation and debris build-up, which makes it necessary to regularly clean and do maintenance to protect the load cells and other components in the case of pit weighbridges.


Space Requirements: Pitless weighbridges are installed on top of the surface and hence require less space. The pitless weighbridge must be built with ramps on both sides for vehicles to enter the platform. Additional space may be necessary for the facility. A pit weighbridge allows vehicles to access it from both sides, which provides operating flexibility.


Flexibility: Pitless weighbridges are easy to install without civil work, which makes it easier to shift to another place when required. The modular design makes it convenient to customize as per requirements from time to time without the need for major modifications. Due to the pit structure, pit weighbridges are difficult to relocate.


Accuracy: The pit weighbridge offers better accuracy due to the stability and controlled environment in which it is installed. External influences like wind or uneven terrain may not affect weight measurements. 

On the other hand, pitless weighbridges may see variations in measurement based on temperature changes or the movement of the foundation. However, newer pitless weighbridges are likely to provide reliable and accurate data.

Pit and pitless weighbridges have advantages and are equally good in most respects. They can be chosen on the basis of space availability, purpose, and terrain.
